If you or someone you know is a wheelchair or mobility equipment user- ask them… when was the last time you had it deep cleaned? Not just a quick wipe down, but a deep clean, leaving them with that fresh feeling!
Spot cleaning and using a disinfectant or sanitiser is not sufficient to address the development of biofilms on hard and soft surfaces.
A recent study found 74% of mobility equipment is not regularly deep cleaned, which considering this equipment is used on a daily basis, this stat is overwhelming!
At Pure Wheelchairs we are on a mission to change this by providing a service that is accessible, affordable, and improving the lives of wheelchair users. We believe in #Equality and ensuring those with disability or mobility challenges have access to a service that cares for their health and wellbeing, as well as providing them with dignity and that ‘clean’ fresh feeling, that should be a part of everyday life.
In this blog post, we'll dive into the benefits of wheelchair deep cleaning, and the most-asked questions, so you can book your clean with confidence!

The Benefits of Wheelchair Cleaning
There are many benefits of having mobility equipment deep-cleaned by a professional service. First, deep cleaning removes built-up dirt and grime that accumulates over time.
More than that, deep cleaning helps prevent the spread of germs and bacteria, as well as improve the overall appearance anf feeling of the chair, giving it a fresh look and feel.
How Often Should You Get Your Wheelchair Cleaned?
Cleaning wheelchairs depends on a number of factors, such as the frequency with which they are used and where they are used. It's recommended to schedule a deep clean every three to six months if you use your chair daily. For kiddie chairs, they tend to require more frequent cleaning too so it’s advisable booking in a clean every three months.
If the chair is used less frequently, you may be able to schedule cleanings on a six month to yearly basis. However, it's important to remember that regular maintenance, such as wiping down the chair after each use, can help extend the interval between deep cleans as well as the use of our Pure One.
How Do I Keep My Chair Clean Between Deep Cleans?
In addition to scheduling regular deep cleans, there are several things you can do to keep your chair clean between cleanings:
A clean, soft brush (like a large paintbrush or dustpan brush) is good for flicking out crumbs and dust in areas where they build up.
A damp microfibre cloth can be used to wipe down areas that are frequently touched and help prevent dirt from building up and becoming hard to remove during a deep clean.
If the chair is being used outdoors, consider investing in a cover to protect it from harsh elements.
If you’re dealing with stains or spills, we at Pure Wheelchairs have our own enzyme-based cleaning product, Pure One (Step One and Step Two). These gentle, natural cleaning products break down organic matter and related odours, specifically developed for spills and stains that happen mostly on wheelchairs like food, drink, urine, or saliva.
Note: Pure One is not for use around or on electrical components or touch screens. Use only as directed on the label.
We also always recommend that wheelchair users order an extra cushion cover when they get a new cushion (or new chair) so that the cover can be easily swapped out when one needs washing.
How Can You Clean an Electric Wheelchair Without Damaging It?
Our method utilises super-heated dry steam that
Leaves the wand at 5% humidity and heat to 170 degrees celsius in the boiler.
Clinically proven to kill 99.9% of all pathogens, including Covid-19, and is a very effective, chemical-free method of cleaning and sterilising.
Also proven to break through bio-films and destroy the bacteria living within them. Biofilms are sticky films (sometimes microscopic) that develop on surfaces. They are generated by bacteria to create a perfect breeding ground and are resistant to many conventional forms of cleaning.
Careful work and good training allow us to work in close proximity to the sensitive electrical components of your chair, without causing damage.
Steam is not used directly on electrical components, or on areas that are sensitive to high temperatures. In those areas, we use 100% Isopropyl alcohol with our professional-grade microfibre cloths to clean and sanitise the area.
Your equipment is usually dry and ready to use within minutes of us completing the job.
